What You Need to Know About Fumigation

Fumigation is one of the most common methods for dealing with a multitude of small pests.

For many home owners pests can be both a bother and an embarrassment, sometimes in equal measure. Fumigation utilizes chemicals known as pesticides in a gaseous state. These gases are sprayed over the location of the infestation; whether it in an office building, a home, or even a public area. Many of our clients are surprised that the fumigation process is used in a wide variety of areas, including major import and export locations. There are also agricultural applications, where a plant is actually treated in order to keep insects and other pests out of the soil and off of the plant.

The Steps for Proper Fumigation

There are a number of specific steps that are followed in order to complete a fumigation and eliminate the menacing pests. Just like with any pest control, the first step is always to identify what area needs to be treated. Once that has been taken care of the next step in the process is to seal off the area. Now the actual fumigation process takes place, and the chemicals are sprayed around the infested area that has been sealed off. After the chemicals have been sprayed there is a mandatory waiting period that allows for the chemicals to disperse, and to take effect. The waiting period differs depending upon the pests and the type of chemical being used, but once the period is over a thorough check is require to make sure that the chemicals did their job. If for whatever reason the method was ineffective the first time it would need to be repeated. Once it has been determined that the fumigation was successful, the area that exposed to the chemicals needs to be left to air out.

Main Categories of Fumigation

The two main categories for the methods of fumigation are sub surface and surface. Sub surface fumigation is used for areas like soil, storage tanks, and subways. Surface fumigation is utilized for more open areas like homes or offices. The location that is being fumigated obviously determines the method that will be used, it is impossible to use the same method for a hose that you would use for a subway.
